Ernest Morgan Williams
Ernest Morgan Williams was a state school teacher based in Bendigo, who, like many of his ilk, was a member of the local militia and in 1906 he joined the permanent military forces. He was promoted a Captain in 1913.
His war service began on 15 August 1914 when he transferred to the AIF, and he was brigade major of the First Cavalry Brigade from 1914 to 1916 at Gallipoli and in Egypt. During 1916 he was with the 4th Division, and he commanded the 13th Light Horse. He was with the 3rd Division in 1917, and the Australian Mounted Division in 1918. In the same year he was appointed successively commandant of the Cavalry Corps School of Instruction at Jaffa, and Administrator of Hospitals at Damascus. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.S.O.
In 1918. During the war period he served in Egypt, France, and Palestine. After his return to Australia in February, 1920, he returned to the Permanent Army and went to the Staff College at Quita (India) for two years, and on his return joined the club.
He was appointed to the First Cavalry Division, where he remained until 1929, in which year he became G.S.O. of the 4th Division. On February 1, 1932, he was appointed Acting Adjutant and Quartermaster General of the Third Military District. In 1935 He was posted to Tasmania as Base Commandant and Commander of the First Military District. He retired in 1941 after a very full military career and died in 1959.
