To commemorate 100 years since the Armistice, we would like to introduce you to 100 members of Caulfield RSL over the next 100 days
Harold Milne Moyes
Harry Moyes was a promising VFL footballer who started playing for St Kilda in the second half of the 1915 Season. However, in January 1916 at Age 19 and 5 months he enlisted as a Sapper in the 10 Field Company Engineers. Very soon he was at the front, digging trenches and building defences with his company.
In October 1916 whilst on leave in London, He was recruited by another soon-to-be Caulfield RSL member Frank Beaurepaire, who was organising an Australian Rules Game for the troops playing for the 3 Division Headquarters team. On the opposing Combined Training Units team was an Essendon Player Clyde McDonald, who would also join Caulfield after the war.
In April 1917 he was wounded and evacuated to England for treatment. In November, having recovered he went back to France. In Feb 1918 he was again wounded, this time more seriously. After evacuation to England it was decided to repatriate him to Australia, and so he returned home and was discharged from the Army in September 1918.
He returned to St Kilda and played 61 games and kicked 126 goals until 1924, when he played 2 seasons with Melbourne playing 45 games and kicking 106 goals making a total of 232 goals for his career.
Third Australian Division Team:
